About the MLC Facility:

The MLC was established in the Department of Mathematics during the fall semester of the 1982-83 academic year. The initial operations of the MLC are supported by grants to the university from the Burroughs-Wellcome Company and the Kenan Charitable Trust Fund. Located on the third floor of the Science Complex, the computer labs (3226 & 3236) and the MLC (3238) provide services in the following areas.

  • General tutoring and assistance in computer science & mathematics courses.
  • Use of reference materials (textbooks, journals, standard exam practices, etc.).
  • View lecture video tapes for most of the mathematics and probability and statistics courses.
  • Computer labs for computer science students.
  • Computer labs for some mathematics courses that have computer component in their instructions.

Students use the MLC facility to achieve a variety of learning objectives. They report many classroom successes after using the center to:

  • Review materials and concepts forgotten or never quite learned well.
  • Improve their understanding of the course materials and assignments for classes in which they are presently enrolled.
  • Aid in supplementing instructor's discussion and explanations of complicated materials with increased comprehension.
  • Develop test taking skills.
  • Review and complete practice test sessions for a variety of professional examinations.
  • Increase special perceptions and obtain visual representations of abstract notions that aid in solving word problems.
